Abstract

This paper critically examines the concept of al-Dakhil in Qur'anic exegesis through the lens of Sufistic interpretation as its central focus. Al-Dakhil is understood as foreign elements that infiltrate Qur'anic interpretation, including non-Qur'anic narratives (such as Isra'iliyyat), influences of foreign philosophy, and interpretations based solely on intuition lacking a strong foundation in the primary texts. Although traditionally seen as corrupting the purity of the text’s meaning, within the Sufi tradition, what is labeled as al-Dakhil is often viewed as the result of spiritual contemplation and inner unveiling (kashf). This study outlines the differing paradigms in understanding al-Dakhil, explores a Qur'anic verse frequently interpreted in a Sufi manner, and elaborates on the development of Sufi exegesis containing elements conventionally classified as al-Dakhil. The findings suggest that the Sufi approach to sacred texts is epistemologically valid due to its foundation in soul purification and direct relationship with divine reality.
